Brixton deli shortlisted for prestigious national Farm Shop & Deli Awards 2019

Guzzl, the Brixton Village food shop that has only been trading for just over a year, has been shortlisted as one of the best delis in the whole of the UK.

The independent retailer, owned and run by long-term Brixton resident Andrew Murray-Watson, has been shortlisted in the Best Deli and Best Newcomer categories in the 2019 Farm Shop & Deli Awards – to be held in Birmingham on 8 April.

Guzzl was chosen from hundreds of entries after members of the judging panel made ‘secret shopper’ visits to the store to check out its wide range of products from local suppliers.

Chair of Judges and Food & drink journalist & broadcaster Nigel Barden said: “I am delighted to be involved with the Farm Shop & Deli Awards. It’s a fabulous initiative for the sector and offers the best way to recognise and reward excellence for the UK’s local, artisan and high street speciality retailers.”

Andrew Murray-Watson, owner of Guzzl, said: “Since we opened the doors of the shop in November 2017, we have done our best to champion local producers and as a Brixton resident I am thrilled that this local independent business has been recognised at a national level.”

This year there are 50 businesses shortlisted as category finalists, which include nine who are also potential ‘Newcomer of the Year’ winners. The regional winners, who represent the very best retailers that stand out among their local competition from across nine UK regions, will be selected from the category finalists and also announced live at the awards ceremony.

The shortlist for the prestigious awards has been announced with winners due to be unveiled at Farm Shop & Deli Show Monday 8th April at the NEC, Birmingham
